Where overwhelmed with the deep feelings for their children, few parents of children with intellectual disability got self-motivated to serve. Children in society and joined their hands to conceive Sadhana Society for the mentally handicapped.
For the purpose to educate and train the special children Sadhana society started their Institute 'Sadhana vocational training institute' for the mentally handicapped in Chandigarh. The institute opened up new avenues for intellectually disabled under the expert guidance of educators, physiotherapist, speech therapist, yoga and dance teachers and the parents working voluntarily hard.
Children are put to various schemes and programmes with the scientific approach apart from the basic academic. They are imported training in vocations like Diya making and decorating, Shagun gift envelope making, carry bag and files making, photo stating and computer training, art classes like dancing, painting, music and dance are part of regular curriculum.Sports and exercises for their physical fitness are essential part of it.
Children are given best exposure to provide them a platform to show their Hidden talents and potential. Our students do us proud in Olympics every year by winning in different sports at zonal and national levels. They have brought us proud by winning awards in music and dance competitions Tejaswani Sharma is the star of our Institute.
Not only intellectually disabled but also suffering from cerebral palsy and visual problems is star or miracle of god blessed with the rare gift of singing. Unable to count from one to hundred but can sing hundreds of songs. Restricted to the age of 8, unable to walk, talk or even blink her eyes she struggled for life since her birth, but it is music that revived Tejaswani when she was 11 Her mother during the car drive suddenly noticed her humming the tune been played on the car stereo that was a occasion for the family. To encourage her talent she was enrolled in a Music Academy where she learnt number of bhajans, ghazals and classical and folk song. Thereon it was her continuous journey towards her goal to be a professional singer, When she grows up.
And today, her dreams have come true she has become a world famous singer apart from winning a number of music competition she got many awards and recognition she was even honoured with President National Award she was recognised by the great artists like Akshay Kumar,Anuradha Paudwal, Anupam Kher and Hema Malini and many others. She entered in semifinals of SA, RE, GA, MA, PA music program, MTV and the in Indian music program on TV. She keeps giving her music performances not only in various parts of India but in foreign countries like London, Canada also. Richa Singh is one another student who has Down syndrome. She is an excellent dancer. She has won many awards for dance competition and got several awards for dance.
Vinay Sharma is one student who has shown remarkable victories in sports in Olympics. He has not only wone many competitions at National level but also he went to China and got gold medal in athlete at international level.
He remained as a student at our Institute for many years but now we have rehabilitated him as an Assistant sports teacher to train the other students of the institute and is paid salary for that. He is Prepared in a way that he can even pick up a job anywhere else with good confidence. He is able to manage a happy married life with his wife and twin children. This job imbibes self-owner in him and respect in the heart of his wife and children that make him lead a normal life. Like Vinay four of other students were rehabilitated. They were provided with Assistant teachers' job in the institute and lead a respectable life. In fact each child has a success story of its own they have learnt a lot and with a little support can lead a normal life. We have tried to bring them in mainstream so that they should be taken as a blessing not as a curse by the parents and as a useful assets by the society and the Nation.
